In the past few years the debate around the handing out of "participation trophies" has managed to divide the sports community.
One side believes that every competitor deserves a 'job well done,' regardless of the end result of a game. The other side believes that awards only belong to winners, and that participation trophies provide people with the wrong message, crowning competitors as winners regardless of how they perform. 2015 National League MVP Bryce Harper belongs to the latter group.
While speaking to a group of Little League players on Saturday, Harper made his opinion on the matter crystal clear, telling the young ball players that participation trophies are not okay.
Harper has done a fair amount of winning throughout his career, collecting a Rookie of the Year Award, a Silver Slugger Award, a Hank Aaron Award and four All-Star appearances to go with his NL MVP Award. So he does know a thing or two about having a winning mentality.
What are your thoughts on Harper's comments?
