For the first time since the 2014/15 season, a new Stanley Cup champion will be crowned thanks to the Washington Capitals. Monday night, the Caps eliminated the Penguins in six games to advance the Eastern Conference Final, ending Pittsburgh's hopes of a three-peat.
With the Penguins out, the Stanley Cup decided the appropriate thing to do was take to Twitter to break things off with the defending champs.
The Cup's relationship with the Pens has run its course, but as the old saying goes, if you love something let it go and if it comes back, it was meant to be. Of course, the Penguins will have to work a little harder for that to happen, too.
Who said trophies couldn't handle breakups?
