Even though 2020 has been a whirlwind year, to say the least, it has also been heavily motivational and uplifting for women within sports. From Callie Brownson to Becky Hammon just last night, women have been breaking down barriers that were long overdue.

So what better way to end off the year, than another history-making hire?

On Thursday morning, the Boston Red Sox confirmed they were hiring Bianca Smith as a minor league coach per the Boston Globe. Bianca’s hiring makes her the first black woman to hold a coaching position within professional baseball.

A former softball player at Dartmouth, Smith is a former intern with both the Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds, along with MLB’s main corporate offices. Most recently, Smith served as the hitting coach for the Carroll University Pioneers DIII baseball team, as well as the school’s athletics administrator.

Just this past year, Major League Baseball has made a name for themselves amongst other professional leagues with their approach to diversity and the hiring of women, especially women of colour.

With the San Francisco Giants hiring Alyssa Nakken as the first full-time woman coach and the Miami Marlins hiring Kim Ng, the first woman and Asian-American General Manager, the league has definitely set itself apart.

What a way to end off 2020 and we can’t wait to see what Bianca brings to the table!
