Don’t know if this was an intentional troll job, but holy cow do we ever hope it was.

The Seattle Kraken are now officially the NHL’s 32nd franchise, and on Monday the newly minted squad played one of the league’s oldest teams – the Montreal Canadiens. Ahead of puck drop, the Kraken raised a banner celebrating the Seattle Metropolitans 1917 Stanley Cup victory. While paying homage to the city’s hockey past, some believe there was also an alternative agenda involved – a troll job!!

The Metropolitans 1917 triumph came at the expense of the Montreal Canadiens, so raising a banner celebrating the win in front of the 2021 Habs was seen by some as a hilarious jab.

Seattle’s current hockey team picked up right where Seattle’s old hockey team left off in 1917 – with a win over the Habs! The Mets would play another few years before folding in 1924, and the 1917 Cup (the first won by an American team) remained the city’s only Cup… so far.
