The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the most high-powered offences the NBA has ever seen. Coming into their conference finals series against the Boston Celtics, the Cavs were heavily favoured. These odds only increased after a Game 2 injury to Celtics star Isaiah Thomas. Cleveland’s 14th consecutive playoff win seemed imminent.
As a way of embracing their super-villain reputation, LeBron and his team strutted onto the court to the music of another high-profile villainous team - the “Monstars” of Warner Bros Space Jam.
In the 1996 film, Bugs Bunny and the other Loony Tunes characters desperately try to compete at the same level as the Monstars, recruiting NBA legend Michael Jordan to their team in the process. The Monstars spend most of the movie seeming to be unbeatable, and laughing in the face of the smaller, slower Tune Squad. On Sunday, The Cavs took on the role of the Monstars of the NBA:
The video even ends with the commentator bluntly stating that the Celtics were going to get swept. This gesture was a clear statement from the Cavs, that they are the bigger, stronger team. The only problem with the move is that (Spoiler alert) the Monstars lose.
While this does not by necessarily tip the scales to be in favour of Boston, it would be pretty funny if the underdog Celtics came out to Loony Tunes music for Game 4.
