One of the things that shocked most about the NHL avoiding the Olympics was that while they are trying to grow the game, they’re avoiding the event that does it best – something that last night’s women’s gold-medal game proved.
Obviously the NHL wants a bigger chunk of the American market and realistically, their talent pool is better than it has ever been. Along with players that rank among the best in the NHL, like Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, Johnny Gaudreau, Phil Kessel, Blake Wheeler and many others, their women’s program is as good as it’s ever been.
While Canada still holds the better record of the two teams at the Olympics, Team USA has at least matched them in talent. It seems like the two teams are so evenly matched that every game will go to a shootout or overtime. Last night was the same and the nail-biter attracted eyeballs from athletes in the best leagues across the world.
