We are very happy to see spectator counts rising throughout the world of sports as we continue to get back to normal, but it does reinforce the responsibility of fans to behave themselves when attending live events. Unfortunately, one cycling fan at the Tour de France made an ill-advised decision to get a little too close to the action.
That decision resulted in absolute carnage.
With 45km to go in the opening stage of the race, cameras showed a fan holding out a sign that read “Allez Opi-Omi.” A simple greeting to the fan’s grandparents ended up being the cause of a massive pile-up in which dozens of riders hit the ground, some of whom were left seriously injured.
Cycling reporter Daniel McMahon believes that it is the worst Tour de France crash he’s ever seen.
Photos emerged of injured riders following the pile-up.
Happy to have fans back at events, but let’s make sure everyone is staying safe out there! As for the fan, nobody is quite sure what happened to her. She was no longer at the scene as cycling officials searched for the crash creator.
