Steven Stamkos was the clear cut number one pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft after putting together a dominant OHL career. In his two seasons with the Sarnia Sting, the Markham, Ontario native scored 100 goals and added 97 assists for 197 points in just 124 games.
Later this year, the Sarnia Sting organization is going to honour the Tampa Bay Lightning captain by retiring his No. 91 later this season.
The Sting will raise Stamkos’ No. 91 to the rafters on Friday, January 12, during an on-ice ceremony ahead of their game against the Windsor Spitfires and you can bet the 27-year-old will be in attendance for the big night.
Stamkos’ 197 points ranks him 9th on the Sting’s all-time points leaderboard, but played a minimum of 54 less games than any of the players above him on the list.
The two-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner is the only player in the team’s history to ever rock No. 91 and now no one else will ever get the chance.
