Across the sports world, many athletes have weighed in on the Black Lives Matter movement and offered their direct support by participating at protests and donating money to local organizations.
Two-time WNBA champion Renee Montgomery is choosing to take her commitment to the next level. She announced on social media that she plans to sit out the upcoming season in order to work on social justice reform; Montgomery is under contract with the Atlanta Dream.
Montgomery started all 34 games for the Dream last year, but the team has thrown its support behind her decision to step away from the game to focus on reform. The WNBA recently reached an agreement to play an abbreviated 22-game season, with players to receive 100 percent of their salaries.
Montgomery joins WNBA superstar Maya Moore in her decision to sit out the season to work on social justice issues. Moore announced in January that she plans to skip her second season in a row to focus on criminal justice reform.
