A bat flip is a lot like a Storm Surge, a lot of people hate it but even more people love it.
On Tuesday night the New York Mets were in San Diego for a tilt with the Padres and the two teams went back and forth all night long. With the game locked in a 5-5 tie in the top of the ninth inning, Mets standout rookie Pete Alonso belted his 11th home run of the season to put his team on top and celebrated with a fantastic bat flip.
As awesome as the home run and the bat flip were, the best part about the entire thing is the umpire’s reaction after he noticed that the bat was sailing over his head.
The bat didn’t come close to hitting home plate umpire Bill Miller but that didn’t stop the vet from having a chat with the rookie when he finished rounding the bases.
Through his first 37 games Alonso has 11 home runs and 31 RBI to go with a .275 batting average and a .353 OBP.
