Philadelphia Eagles fans will always remember the Philly Special, but it turns out they nearly used it at the wrong time; which might have ultimately changed the outcome of the Super Bowl.
On Friday’s episode of The Mission of Truth: Keeping it Real podcast with Nick Foles and Chris Maragos, the Super Bowl LII MVP revealed that they nearly spoiled the Philly Special during their NFC Championship blowout of the Minnesota Vikings.
Foles mentions in the podcast that Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson called the play and was prepared to use it against the Vikings, but he mentioned to his coach that there was no need to use it yet since they had such a big lead.
"We were already up, I think, 31-7, something like that," Foles said. "I talked to Doug and I was like, ‘ah, we don’t need it. We’re up by so much, let’s not waste it.’ But in reality, another reason was I was worried about turning and running out and trying to catch the ball. I didn’t know if I would be able to lift my arm up and turn and catch it because of the rib shot earlier in the game."
Foles was dealing with a sore rib that came from a big hit courtesy of Anthony Barr earlier in the game, but if he wasn’t hurting from the hit the Eagles were prepared to roll with the trick play that helped secure them their first Super Bowl in franchise history.
"It almost happened and it was one of those moments honestly it probably does happen if my ribs aren’t killing me," Foles said. "Because it would have just lit the Linc on fire. It was already insane. Obviously, the Philly Special became a legendary play. I’m glad we didn’t use it then."
Good thing the Eagles already had the game in the bag or else things might have gone a little differently for them in the big game.
