Sometimes changing teams in the NHL can prove to be a bit of a challenge for NHLers. New city, new teammates, new fans… it’s a lot to take in all at once, and there are loads of times you see players wanting to re-sign with their current team rather than go through the grueling process of moving the whole family to a new place.

Other times, the change is welcome. There may be no greater example of that than Joel Edmundson joining the Montreal Canadiens.

The new Habs defenceman signed a four-year deal with Montreal worth an average annual value of $3.5 million. The move to Montreal was made extra special by the fact that it is his father’s favourite team, and a team he grew up seeing around the house. His father was diagnosed with lung cancer, which Joel found out about before heading into last season’s playoffs, so the contract with Montreal has proved to be an extra special bright spot for him and his father.

Even if you don’t cheer for the Habs, it’s hard not to cheer for a story like this.
