Over the years, we’ve seen several football players try their hand at singing or rapping. Most of the time, it sounds horrible like LaDainian Tomlinson’s “LT Slide Electric Glide” song, or the 1985 Chicago Bears’ “Super Bowl Shuffle.”
The Detroit Lions are on their bye week after hammering the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football, and receiver Marvin Jones JR decided to use the off time try his hand at singing.
The California native sang in a choir as a kid, and put his skills to test down in Nashville by trying out for American Idol. The judges were Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan, and it’s safe to say they were shocked with how good Jones was.
It was just a good opportunity,” Jones told ESPN’s Michael Rothstein. “Usually, it’s funny because I’ve been in the league six years and there’s still people who don’t know I can sing. I’ve never really put myself out there like that, just when people were nagging me to do it."
Jones is only 27, and still has several more years in front of him. If football for whatever reason doesn’t work out, he could always trade in the cleats and gloves for a microphone and headphones. It doesn’t hurt that Jones plays in one of the most musical cities in the world known as Motown.
The four-year pro has a recording studio built in his Detroit house, and has been recording lots of music, but has yet to release any tracks.
Not bad, eh? That's probably the best voice we've ever seen from an athlete.
The 15th season and final season of American Idol known as "The Farewell Season" will debut on March 11.
