With a 18-13 record and the fourth seed in the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers are having a fine season. Yet, you knew that when LeBron James signed in Los Angeles, he had superstars on the mind.

One rumor in particular suggests than Pelicans forward Anthony Davis, whose name has cropped up in some early MVP conversations this season, could depart in free agency after this season, and LeBron weighed in on the possibility of a team-up.

Granted, it isn’t much as far as these sort of quotes go — anybody would respond the same way to getting Anthony Davis! — but ESPN’s Brian Windhorst followed up thoroughly with further reporting on the likelihood of Davis joining the Lakers.

According to Windhorst, Davis “has given no indication he wants to leave New Orleans,” nor do the Pelicans have any interest in trading their star when he could still re-sign in the summer. (The Celtics, with their cache of assets, would be the Pelicans’ preferred trade partner if it came to that.) However, he describes the situation as tenuous, and also points out that Davis recently hired LeBron’s agent (and close friend) Rich Paul as his own representation.

In all likelihood, this is a situation that will play out through the season, and both Davis and the Pelicans appear committed to making things work. However, if the team stumbles, there certainly could be the chance to see LeBron team up with a do-it-all superstar big man, and even for LeBron, who has accomplished so much in his career, that would be a first.
