John Tavares deciding to leave the New York Islanders to join the Toronto Maple Leafs is definitely one of the biggest storylines from the NHL offseason. The superstar centre decided to pack his bags and leave the city in which he spent his entire career to that point. As a result, there was a shockwave across the hockey world.

That included, in a very big way, former Leafs GM and newly appointed Isles GM Lou Lamoriello. The longtime NHL general manager joined the Isles before JT decided to leave, and there’s little doubt that it would have given him at least a slight feeling of disappointment when he heard the news.

Despite that, Lamoriello recently made a comment that surprised many. When asked about Tavares’ departure, responded by saying the lack of success the Isles had with him there made it easier to see him go.

That sounds like some direct shade being thrown, doesn’t it? On Saturday, Tavares had the opportunity to respond. Instead of lashing out, JT decided to take the approach that he did take responsibility as a captain of the team, but also that he has no regrets about the effort that he put in.
