Things aren’t exactly going well for the Vancouver Canucks on their Southern United States road trip.
The team dropped their fourth straight game on Friday night by falling to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1.
Goaltender Jacob Markstrom allowed four goals on 33 shots, and after the game, the Canucks starter had a pretty frank take on the current state of the club right now.
It should be noted that Markstrom acknowledge that he needed to be better himself before calling out his teammates, so he’s not just throwing the blame around without taking any responsibility.
Even though Markstrom didn’t signal anyone out, these type of comments are generally best to keep behind closed doors. Calling out your teammates in the media is always a risky approach, as it can give a team a little jolt, or create an uneasiness inside the locker room. While some may appreciate the refreshing honesty, it doesn’t look good optically when one of your most important players questions the players management has assembled to play together.
You can beat the Canucks PR team wasn’t exactly thrilled with the comments.
Getting run support for their goaltenders has been an issue of late, as the team have scored just six goals over their last four games. Markstrom is 15-19-5 on the season with a 2.78 goals against average and a .908 save percentage.
The Canucks sit 28th overall in the NHL with 48 points, and have finished 29th and 28th in the last two seasons.
