The humanitarian work J.J. Watt has done for the city of Houston and its citizens is nothing short of incredible
The Texans defensive tackle spearheaded a fundraising campaign in efforts to mitigate the damage in the city caused by the devastating Hurricane Harvey that has claimed the lives of at least 45 people. With an initial goal of $200,000, the current flood relief fund sits over $17.5 million as of Sunday morning thanks to almost 167,000 donours.
From Chris Paul, to Nazem Kadri and Drake, the overwhelming support and success of Watt’s campaign has demonstrated how powerful and useful social media can be when utilized in the right fashion. When the hurricane reached its peak amount of destruction, Watt was on the road with the Texans and was forced to divert to Dallas after finishing a pre-season game in New Orleans, which put the 28-year-old and his teammates in a difficult and precarious position.
Thousands of Southern Texans are homeless and don’t have the resources nor necessities to fend for themselves at the moment. That’s where Watt’s campaign comes in useful. What’s really driving the difference, though, is his tangible dedication to make sure the logistics of the supplies and funds are actually making their way to those in need.
Watt and his teammates gathered nine semi-trucks full of donations and brought the supplies to a local warehouse, where they’ll personally deliver the goods along with a group of volunteers.
