Now, we understand why Islanders fans are upset with John Tavares and while there are certainly some fans that take things overboard, people can do whatever they want with their jerseys and it appears John Tavares gift wrapped their latest idea for them.
The most recent photo of an Islanders fan defacing their Tavares jersey that’s circulating is one from an Isles preseason game where a fan has taped over his last name on the back. Instead of saying Tavares, it now says “Pajama Boy”. We’re not really sure that this is accomplishing what this fan set out to do, because John Tavares said this about himself and realisitically, it was about what made these fans upset.
Pajama Boy can be used as slang for an immature man (Largely popularized by a conservative meme in 2013), but we’re not sure this is accomplishing what the Islanders fan had hoped. In the context of being on a Tavares jersey, this mainly brings up memories of the moment that he left, basically saying:
- John Tavares wore Pajamas as a kid
- John Tavares was a Leafs fan growing up
Either way, we’re sure we’ll see the term used a lot as Islanders fans voice their displeasure with their former captain.
