Alex Ovechkin is one win away from winning his first Stanley Cup and making history in the process.
Thursday night, if the Capitals are able to win Game 5 on the road, they will capture the franchise's first Stanley Cup and Ovi will become the first Russian captain in NHL history to hoist the Cup.
Given Ovi's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, it's fair to wonder if he'll visit the President with Lord Stanley's Mug. This hypothetical scenario begs this question, though, has anyone ever brought the Cup to Putin?
Since Putin has been in office, a lot of big names have won Stanley Cups, like Pavel Datsyuk, Sergei Fedorov, Evgeni Malkin, and Sergei Gonchar.
After doing some research, though, we haven't been able to find any pictures of Putin with the Stanley Cup or articles about players bringing the Cup to him. We did, however, find a video of Malkin and Gonchar brining the Cup to Moscow.
We also found this videos of Malkin with the Cup in Russia.
This research isn't to say that no player has ever brought the Cup to Putin, but based on the lack of photographical or video evidence, it doesn't seem like it's happened before.
If Ovechkin wins the Cup, though, that could change.
