The Edmonton Elks honoured Joey Moss’ legacy on Friday at training camp as the team awarded defensive back Jonathan Rose with the inaugural Joey Moss Award.

Elks Director of Football Operations Kris Hagerman had the idea for the award after seeing firsthand the type of impact Moss had on the players during training camp ever since Moss was first introduced to the club in 1986, and it will be awarded at the end of training camp every year going forward to a player who has persevered through adversity and embodies Joey’s positivity.

Rose, 28, suffered a neck injury in Ottawa’s third game of the 2019 CFL season and had to work his way back from spinal fusion surgery. The two-time East Division All-Star signed a deal with the Elks at the beginning of 2021 and now he’s the first-ever winner of the Joey Moss Award.
