Watching a position player take the mound for an inning, or even for a single batter, used to be a rare thing in baseball, but now it’s starting to become the normal thing to do during a blowout.

We’re nearing the halfway point of the 2019 MLB campaign and it seems like we’re going to see a record this season for most position players used to pitch in a single season. On Thursday night alone we witnessed three position players take the mound and two of them were teammates.

The first one of the night came in Arizona where Dodgers catcher Russell Martin worked a scoreless 8th inning while striking out one batter along the way.

This wasn't Martin's first appearance on the mound as he got some work in last season.

Meanwhile in Houston, Astros fans had to watch their team get absolutely destroyed by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night, but at least the ones who stuck it out until the end of the game got to witness a couple of position players take the mound in Tyler White and Max Stassi.

White ended up having an extremely rough outing as he gave up four hits and six earned runs, including two home runs, in 0.2 innings of work, while Stassi came in for relief to record the final out of the inning.
