It’s the most wonderful time of the year for sports fans. The NHL and the NBA are at their most intense, with both leagues down to just two remaining teams duking it out for the glory of a championship. On top of that, summer sports are just starting to kick off in the MLS, CFL, and MLB. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to watch, with sports overlapping in prime time spots, and apparently that rings true with more than just fans.
Max Scherzer took the mound on Wednesday and proceeded to toss an absolute gem of a start against the Baltimore Orioles. In typical Scherzer fashion, the Washington Nationals ace threw eight innings of shutout ball, only allowing two base hits and giving up one walk. On top of that, he punched out 12 batters. While this type of performance is what baseball fans have come to expect out of Scherzer, hockey fans will argue that there was something else contributing to his success. The Washington Capitals.
As a National League pitcher does, Scherzer would usually have the responsibility of picking up a bat and hitting during the Nats’ offensive half innings. Fortunately for Scherzer, the Nats were going head-to-head with an American League team in an American League park. That means designated hitters were in play, which worked out very well for Caps fan Scherzer.
It was a good night for the pitcher, as both the Capitals and the Nationals took home the W. Needless to say, people loved the hockey fandom shown by the Nationals’ star pitcher.
