Oh boy.
As the days wind down towards Boxing Day, Team Canada is inching closer and closer to finalizing its roster. Canada should enter the tourney as the favourite but there’s just one issue; they might not have one of their best players. Last night in a game against some of the best USports players from around the country, forward Alex Formenton suffered a scary looking knee injury and was forced to leave action.
This is as bad as it gets for Canada and more importantly Formenton, who was planning on making his return after helping lead Canada to gold with 2 goals and 2 assists in last year’s tournament. Fans expressed their concern and frustration over the injury afterward on Twitter.
As bad as this is for Canada, let’s not forget that similar to NHL teams with the Olympics or World Cup of Hockey, junior clubs are lending their players for the purpose of the tournament. In this case, the London Knights could find themselves at a disadvantage in the new year. After spending nine games with the Ottawa Senators earlier this season, Formenton was sent down to play with the Knights where he tallied 7 goals and 9 assists in 13 games.
An official injury hasn’t been announced but Formenton’s status is one to monitor over the coming days.
