A lot of people questioned the Browns for taking Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft last week. There were a number of quarterbacks that scouts and analysts thought were better than Mayfield and that includes Josh Rosen.
The consensus is Rosen is the most pro-ready signal caller of the class, but his character and personality rubbed some teams the wrong way. Apparently the Browns were one of those teams.
As per the Canton Repository, Browns Vice President of Player Personnel Alonzo Highsmith used this anecdote when speaking at the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club to help explain why the Browns didn't take Rosen.
“I was at an airport,” he said. “UCLA’s volleyball team was in front of me. You heard so much about Rosen. He’s this or that. We all know how people talk.
“So I asked one of the volleyball coaches, ‘What’s Rosen like?’ He said, ‘Aaaaa, you should probably ask his girlfriend. She’s one of the players. She’s over there.’
“I’m like, ‘All right coach. That’s good enough.’
“I don’t know what all this means, but there was something about him that bothered me.”
Apparently John Dorsey and the rest of his staff felt the same way about Rosen, that something about him bothered them.
The anecdote Highsmith used to make that point, though, was head scratching to say the least.
