The NFL can be a place where dreams come true, but it can also be a harsh and heartbreaking organization.
The San Francisco 49ers haven't had the greatest start to the season. The historical NFL franchise headed into week 9 with an 0-8 record, with a lot of people questioning Brian Hoyer's ability under centre. Prior to the Niners' tilt against the Arizona Cardinals (a game they would go on to lose 20-10), the 49ers pulled off a trade that saw Jimmy Garoppolo come over from the New England Patriots, taking over the starting role. The next logical move for the franchise was to cut Hoyer from their roster.
Unfortunately, it went a little harsher than planned.
Hoyer just happened to be out shopping for Halloween costumes for his son when he got the call. What would usually be a great annual father/son bonding moment suddenly came crashing down.
In the end it all worked out for Hoyer, who signed to a much better team in the New England Patriots just two days later.
As for Hoyer's son, he picked out a ninja costume as his original outfit, a Grim Reaper, was not deemed appropriate for school.
