Alex Smith's story is easily one of the best football stories of 2020.
In 2018, Alex Smith suffered the most terrifying injury that led to the end of his season and many thought the end of his career. In November of 2018, the Washington quarterback suffered a compound fracture of his right leg. He needed emergency surgery and developed an infection that threatened the amputation of Smith’s leg and his life. It took 17 operations and a grueling rehabilitation process but Smith was always determined to return to the field.
This year, he accomplished the seemingly unthinkable in a Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Rams and returned to the field.
Before Sunday night’s game, Smith’s wife Elizabeth posted a photo on Instagram of his leg brace that had been turned into an incredible trophy, one that looked like the Lombardi Trophy.
What an incredible story and what an incredible way to commemorate what they went through, truly inspiring.
