We’ve seen it before when a player loses their skate blade, leading to their comical struggle towards the bench. It is next to impossible to get any traction on the ice when your metal blade suddenly becomes a plastic edge. While this may directly affect skaters that use their mobility more obviously, it can be just as much of a pain to goaltenders.
Tuukka Rask found this out the hard way. The goalie, who’s known to lash out from time to time when he’s angry, found himself in the unfortunately bladeless circumstance after kicking out a rebound. After trying to get the official’s attention, while simultaneously trying to stay in position as much as possible, the puck blew past Rask for a Tampa goal.
In Rask’s opinion, this should not be a goal. He was not able to properly play his position. Unfortunately for Rask, equipment malfunctions such as losing a blade or breaking a stick does not result in a stoppage of play. This didn’t stop Rask from giving the official an earful and actually chucking the blade across the ice.
While he was clearly trying to alert the official of his unfair obstacle, some people on the internet took it upon themselves to have a little fun at Rask’s expense.
