The NHL is relatively conservative when it comes to the media. While the NFL, the NBA, and the MLB all have very eccentric personalities that aren’t afraid to show their true colours, the NHL is a little more reserved. Of course that’s not to say there aren’t outspoken personalities here and there.
Take Alex Ovechkin and John Tortorella for example. Those two are never really afraid to say what’s on their mind.
That sets the stage for Monday night, as the Capitals and the Jackets got off to a bitter start in the first period.
Clearly Ovi was not too happy about the butt-end that landed Matt Calvert a match penalty. Ahead of the second, Ovi let one of the most fiery personalities in the league exactly what he thought.
Needless to say, basically everyone that has followed the two through the years would expect some fireworks in their respective post-game pressers. Instead, they treated us to two very different responses, but both were equally unexpected. It started with Ovi, who (perhaps sarcastically) complimented the Jackets’ bench boss.
Then move on to Torts, who can always be relied upon to give a straight-forward, no-nonsense response. Well, he did – but it’s not what you would expect.
Is this bizzaro NHL? Are the Coyotes heading to the finals? Is Gretzky coming out of retirement?
