We’re just over a week away from December 1st's 5 PM deadline to sign restricted free agents and William Nylander has yet to sign a contract. But that might not be for long, at least that’s what one Columbus Blue Jackets fan with pretty compelling recent tweet seems to think.
Ryan Lacey, a (from the looks of it) pretty die-hard CBJ fan posted a picture of he and Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas, who’s in town for Toronto’s road game tonight at Nationwide Arena. It was the text in the tweet, however, that stood out. After apparently asking Dubas where the team stands with Nylander, the 31-year-old GM stated that he’d have an update by 5 PM Eastern Time.
The social media post quickly caught traction and although questioned by fans, Lacey stuck firmly behind what he said.
There is of course that chance that this is the greatest troll job in the history of hockey. But why would Lacey, a Jackets fan, care to do that to the Atlantic Division’s Leafs? Especially with his own team in a similar free agency predicament with stars Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky?
So about these tweets regarding Babs… they certainly do make Lacey’s case more believable. The head coach stated yesterday that the team’s “significant pieces” should be returning to the lineup. Wonder what he could have meant…
For Lacey’s sake, let’s just hope some sort of deal is struck by 5 PM, because there are going to be a ton of angry Leaf fans if the Swede is still a RFA by then.
