There just few professional Israeli athletes, but the country just gained arguably its most notable one in nearly 71 year history.
Earlier this week, FORMER 6x NBA All-Star and 2002 9th overall draft pick Amarโe Stoudemire was granted Israeli citizenship. Per The Canadian Jewish News, the 36-year-old received his official identity card in a ceremony at the Interior Ministry on Wednesday.
Stoudemire has publicly expressed his love for Israel over the years and has been a member of member of the Hapoel Jerusalem basketball team of the Israeli Premiere League and the Basketball Champions League since 2016. The Lake Wales, native Florida identifies with the Hebrew Israelites, African Americans, who believe they are connected to the biblical Israelites and observe Jewish holidays. The Canadian Jewish News also reported that he told HBO Sports reporter Jon Frankel in 2018 that he is โin the processโ of converting to Judaism.
Though not in his prime anymore, Stoudemire joins a small list of pro Israeli athletes, most notably Omri Casspi of the Memphis Grizzlies. Stoudemire played 16 years in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks before making the move to the Holy Land.
At 36, weโll see how much more damage heโll be able to do on the court before he decides to hangโem up and start his next journey in the middle east.
