A scary incident took place at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday afternoon when a young fan was hit by a foul ball off the bat of Todd Frazier during the fifth inning in a game versus the Twins. A hush fell over the crowd following the terrifying moment, and a stunned Frazier took to his knee in prayer.
Players on the field remained stunned as the young fan was attended to, including Yankees outfielder Matt Holliday who was fighting back tears.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi stated after the game that the young fan was "doing ok," having heard the positive update from the security team at Yankee stadium. Speaking with reporters after the game, Twins second baseman Brian Dozier gave an emotional plea to the league to either put more netting up along the foul lines or to not allow fans below a certain age to sit below a certain row.
It's difficult to disagree with Dozier's appeal to better judgement that safety should always be the main priority, but the infielder's suggestions also seem like something that would be difficult to enforce, and wouldn't necessarily guarantee that no one would be struck by a foul ball. Anyone who has ever been to a ballpark before knows that it doesn't always matter where you're sitting, a ball can hit you just about anywhere depending on who's at the plate.
So, would you support the MLB mandating that all teams place netting alongside the entire foul line?
