Luke Voit has certainly made his mark out on the baseball field with the New York Yankees.
Since being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals back on July 27th, the 26-year-old has been on a tear, mashing 10 homers and 23 RBIs while slashing .308/.390/.615 for a 1.034 OPS.
On Wednesday, Voit belted two bombs to bring his home run total to double digits in the Yankees 10-1 drubbing over the Boston Red Sox.
A quick look at Voit and you’ll quickly notice that he’s one big boy. Listed at 6’3” and 225-lbs, Voit was a high school football standout. His brother, John, suited up in the NCAA for Army as a defensive lineman.
So, naturally, the Voit brothers grew up pumping the iron to pursue their athletics.
During the game, the Yankees broadcast played a clip of Voit bench pressing 135-lbs. Now, you might think that isn’t a lot – it’s only two 45-lb pound plates on each side of the barbell which most weightlifters can easily do – but consider that Voit managed to lift this amount of weight with only one arm.
Not only is that incredibly difficult to lift, but to properly balance it and make sure the barbell doesn’t encounter the rules of gravity by falling to the ground. Then factor in that he doesn’t even have a spotter.
He can also do this with his right hand as well, according to MLB’s Cut-4.
That is one strong baseball player. Next time you want to feel weak at the gym and you’re hitting the bench press, just remember that Voit can lift what you can but with only one arm.
