The Edmonton Eskimos have been using their nickname since they were incepted into the CFL, but in recent years there has been some skepticism about the underlying meaning. With the label “Eskimo” representing an outdated term for Inuk people, some believe that the name has racist or insensitive undertones.
Similar to what the NFL team in Washington is doing, Edmonton has decided to make a change.
It is now being reported that the team will be retiring the nickname, which promptly begs the obvious question; what will the new name be?
It seems as though the frontrunner is the Edmonton Empire, with Empire being a part of the team’s branding for a few seasons. It would also allow the team to remain consistent with their EE logo.
Beyond that, fans have a few other ideas of their own.
