Spring Training is a great time for baseball fans. Not only do they get to see their new players, their prospects, and their franchise favourites all playing in the same games (example, Max Scherzer pitching to Tim Tebow), but the games take place so far south that weather delays are as avoidable as possible – particularly for teams that play farther north and are still trying to find their way out of winter.
Of course the warmer weather isn’t just more tolerable for baseball players and fans, it is also better for animals, including – for the purpose of this article – bees.
While all MLB teams are gathered relatively close to each other in bee-country, bee swarms seem to have taken a particular liking to one team – the San Diego Padres. On Monday during warm ups, the Padres dealt with a huge swarm of bees crashing the party and forcing players down to the ground. As you may be able to gather from the Padres’ caption, it’s not the first time this has happened.
The tweet is referring to a game during last year’s spring training when Colorado Rockies’ players had the misfortune of playing the apparent bee-magnet Padres.
You can actually hear the bees buzzing around, and almost everyone in the infield suddenly hit the deck all at once. Hopefully the Padres are able to make it through the spring without too many stingers. While they seem to be a favourite target, they aren’t the only team to experience bee issues.
