We’re only one game into the season and the Toronto Maple Leafs fan base has already found its new favourite player. While nobody is expecting him to put up the numbers of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, or John Tavares, Toronto continues to embrace Russian rookie Ilya Mikheyev.
Sure, his goal and assist in Wednesday night’s game helps, but he’s winning fans and teammates over with his personality. After the big debut, Mikheyev endeared himself to the fans with his hilarious questioning of why Canadians don’t like soup more.
Maybe just cultural differences, to go alongside with Russia and Canada’s language difference. Luckily for Mikheyev, he’s got a remedy for that.
When Mikheyev scores, Scotiabank Arena should just blast the Friends’ theme song. Can you imagine the whole arena participating in the iconic *CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP* while celebrating a Leafs goal?
Even though we are VERY excited at the thought of Mikheyev dropping Friends references in the near future, we can’t help but feel like there was a missed opportunity when it comes to sitcom choice.
Could this Maple Leafs rookie BE any more precious? At least when he’s crushing soup between periods he has the excuse that “we were on a break.”
