Kendall Waston joined the Vancouver Whitecaps back in 2014 and has been the captain of the team for the past two seasons. On Monday, the 30-year-old received the biggest news of his career as the San Jose, Costa Rica native found out he’ll be representing his country at next month’s World Cup in Russia.

Since getting the call to represent your home country is one of the biggest honours in sports, the Whitecaps decided to make the official announcement a pretty big deal.

The Whitecaps captain probably thought it was just another motivational speech from head coach Carl Robinson, but it actually ended up being a moment for the entire team and his family to congratulate him on his massive achievement.

Waston is one of 19 MLS players who will represent their home country at this year’s World Cup and is the only player from a Canadian MLS club that will be heading overseas for the tournament.
