Anyone that has ever seen a list of the greatest NFL plays all-time has undoubtedly witnessed the iconic “Immaculate Reception.” It likely would have been very close to the top of those lists, as well.
The Immaculate Reception was caught by Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Franco Harris after a miraculous bounce sent the ball unexpectedly his direction. The catch was the beginning of a Steelers rebirth, earning them their first playoff win ever and setting up a run of four Super Bowl titles by the end of the decade (although, not the 1972 postseason in which the famous catch-and-run was made).
On Sunday night, albeit with the stakes much smaller than in 1972, we saw a play that many are dubbing the “Immaculate Reception 2.0.” The catch was hauled in by Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Garrett Bradbury after a pass intended for tight end Tyler Conklin was broken up and sent hurling back towards the line of scrimmage.
The play went down as a 21-yard reception. Not exactly a earth-moving moment like Harris’ reception 50 years ago, but who doesn’t love to see a big man with the ball in his hands?
As it turns out, it wasn't his first rumble. Still, we like to pretend that it was.
