Playoff hockey is around the corner and before we know it, the summer will arrive. And if you’re looking for a new sport to occupy your time during the break, ‘Underwater Hockey’ might just be for you.

The game is played in a pool 2-4 meters deep with six players aside. Swimmers are required to wear fins, a mask, gloves, and use a hockey blade to control the puck. The game is called by three referees, including two in the water and one above who controls the buzzer.

The World Championship has taken place since 1980, where it kicked off in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was most previously held in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2016. The tournament will resume this summer when Canada plays host in Quebec City,

Other hockey fans have more recently discovered new ways to fill the summer’s void. Last year, ‘Soap Hockey’ spread like widefire, a game in which players face off on a giant soapy mat in a floor hockey type format.

Another clever entrepreneur even discovered a way for athletes to work on their hands while enjoying a day at the beach.

When it’s time to open up your pool, buy the proper equipment and give underwater hockey a try. You’re likely not going to find a more enjoyable way to stay in hockey shape during the offseason.
