At this point, the only thing spring training games are good for is to get players ready for the regular season and give prospects the opportunity to make an opening day roster.
Other than that, the final score doesn't matter in the slightest. Still, the games have to be officiated correctly and in a Grapefruit League game between the Tigers and Phillies, umpire Tom Hallion made his presence felt by ejecting five players.
It started in the fifth inning with Matthew Boyd being ejected for hitting Odubel Herrera, which was a questionable ejection at best.
Then in the eighth inning, Phillies pitcher Parker Frazier was the next victim of Hallion's wrath as he was ejected for hitting a Tigers player with a breaking ball. When Phillies manager Gabe Kapler came out to argue, he was also ejected.
The ejections continued in the ninth as another Phillies pitcher (Pedro Beato) was ejected for grazing an Astros player with a pitch, which led to bench coach Rob Thomson coming out, arguing, and then getting ejected.
And that is how you get to five ejections in a spring training game. We can't wait until the regular season starts next Thursday.
