Tyler Seguin faced a lot of criticism during the early years of his NHL career when he was with the Boston Bruins, but he’s managed to change the way people see him ever since he became a member of the Dallas Stars.

This past season, Seguin potted a career-high 40 goals and finished with 78 points in 82 games, but it wasn’t enough to help the Stars make the playoffs as they finished three points out of the final wild card spot in the Western Conference. This offseason, the Dallas Stars are following the players on their roster as they head back home and go through their offseason training in their hometowns.

This latest segment features the five-time NHL All-Star and he touched on a lot of things, but the biggest thing he shared were his true feelings on what it was like to watch the Vegas Golden Knights succeed in their first year while the Stars watched from outside the playoffs.
 

Seguin didn’t shy away from admitting that it was frustrating to see the success the Golden Knights had in their inaugural season, but also mentioned how their early success brought him back to his first years in the league and that it drives him to get back to that point.

“It’s been tough to actually watch Vegas. I didn’t watch them really until the Stanley Cup Finals because it has been a little frustrating and confusing. Kudos to them for what they’ve done, but for a team in their first season to go there and me knowing how hard it is sometimes to just compete, not make the playoffs and get a chance to compete, this team found a way in their first year to not only compete and make the playoffs, but be the best team in the west,” said Seguin. “I think there’s a hidden message through their success of really team bonding. I’m trying to take that message, but it’s still frustrating to see their success because I know how hard it is to get there.”

The 2011 Stanley Cup champion also touched on how great something like that is for your team, whether it’s in the first year or not, and how deep runs in the playoffs form a bond unlike anything else in hockey.
 

“I was kind of probably like how some Vegas guys are feeling. My first year in the league and going to the finals, being fortunate enough to win it all but not understanding how hard it was to get there. My second year, losing in the first round, my third year going back to the finals again, you get this notion it will happen a lot and now going in and out of the playoffs and not making the playoffs, I get the taste I had my first couple of years. I wish I knew how hard it was then but I do now, that taste of how successful we were the first couple of years is what drives me, I want to taste that again. There’s a bond that happens with teammates and in an organization when you compete and go so deep in the playoffs that it’s really unbreakable and I want to have that in Dallas and definitely what drives me.”

The Brampton, Ontario native also talked about how members of that Bruins team still talk in a group chat that’s been going strong for almost eight years and how someday he’d like to have the same thing with his current Dallas Stars teammates.

Seguin also touched on the team’s new set of coaches for the upcoming season, what the guys have to do to stay consistent all year round, and gave the Stars’ social team an exclusive tour of his incredible cottage.
