While the Houston Astros have been able to avoid some of aspects of their widely-expected ‘shame tour’ because of the current empty stadiums, some players have chosen to take matters into their own hands, and the first that comes to mind is surely Trevor Bauer.
Bauer has been critical of the Astros all season long, and he decided to take his feelings to the field by wearing a pair of custom cleats patterened with trash cans. Just in case anyone was going to forget about the Astros’ cheating scandal, Bauer won’t let you!
Bauer has always been an outspoken player, and obviously, nothing has changed. He isn’t even playing against the Astros on Saturday — instead, he’s pitching against the Chicago White Sox — but we guess the Astros are going to catch strays regardless.
Bauer is having his best season by a mile, with a ridiculous 1.71 ERA entering Saturday’s game that has him squarely in the Cy Young conversation. Maybe he finds motivation in being vindictive?
This isn’t the first time that he’s expressed himself by way of custom cleats, either. After Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly was suspended for throwing pitches near the heads of Astros hitters, including Alex Bregman in an incident that led to a benches-clearing dust-up, Bauer almost wore ‘Free Joe Kelly’ cleats to the field before the MLB intervened.
