The town of Lovettsville, Virginia, has a population of roughly 2,000 people. Maybe that has something to do with why the town of Lovettsville, Virginia, does not play. On Thursday, town councillors voted in favour of renaming the town to ‘Capitalsville.’ Lovettsville, you guys are crazy for this one.
The name change is only temporary, of course. It would be cooler if it wasn’t, but we can hardly hold it against the city for deciding against upending their history. The town’s name will revert to Lovettsville at the end of the Stanley Cup Final, or, in the event of a Capitals championship, a week after that.
The town is planning to change signage around the city to reflect the name change, which demonstrates some real (financial) commitment to the bit.
The Capitals are reportedly aware and in liaison with Lovettsville, meaning there’s potential yet for some kind of crossover or collaboration between the team and the small town. If the Capitals win, it seems likely that the Stanley Cup will at some point come through the town.
There’s really no type of confidence like small-town confidence, man. The Capitals would do well to remember that when they hit the ice for Game 1, they’re representing the 2,000 citizens of Capitalsville, too.
