The Cleveland Browns selected Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield with the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft on Thursday night. The quarterback wasted no time getting acquainted with the franchise by selecting the jersey number he’ll dawn as he begins his professional football career.
“I haven’t picked a jersey since high school,” said Mayfield in an Instagram video posted by the Cleveland Browns. Mayfield eventually settled on the number six, which some pointed out as a risky choice given the phrase that the number six is synonymous with for quarterbacks in football: pick-six.
The NFL will no doubt be a large adjustment for Mayfield compared to college football where he flourished, throwing only six interceptions in his senior season. But like most athletes, he’s no stranger to adversity. He was a walk-on at Oklahoma, a feat that also makes him the first walk-on to be selected number one overall in the NFL Draft.
Perhaps if Mayfield's career pans out the way that many expect it to, there will be a shoutout from Drake in the near future for repping the six on his back.
As for the Cleveland Browns, they're just hoping that Mayfield can help them improve on the dismal 0-16 season they suffered through in the 2017 season.
