The NFL has been playing on Thanksgiving Day since 1934 when the Chicago Bears took on the Detroit Lions.

This longstanding NFL tradition to celebrate family, food and most importantly FOOTBALL is one of the most fun times of the year! There have been some epic moments in the 86 year history of the Thanksgiving game, here is our Top 5.

5. Jerome Bettis Tails

We start off with a moment which isn’t even a football play. A coin flip in overtime between the Lion and Steelers which had a slight but of miscommunication. When asked what side of the coin the Steelers would choose, running back Jerome Bettis said "tails" however, head official Phil Luckett heard Bettis say heads and that is when the chaos ensues.

The Lions went on to win the game with a field goal and the Steelers didn’t win another game that season. That season was also the last time we would see Barry Sanders in a Thanksgiving game as he announced his shocking retirement that offseason.

4. Barry Sanders runs wild

Speaking of Barry Sanders, he Iands next on this list with one of greatest performances of Thanksgiving and NFL history. In a rivalry matchup against the Bears, Sanders helped himself to 167 rushing yards with a side of three touchdowns.

That year, Sanders shared MVP honours with Brett Favre after rushing for 2,053 yards and 14 total touchdowns.

3. Don't touch that ball Leon Lutt

This moment is a big oopsie in 1993 courtesy of Leon Lutt. The Cowboys were leading the Dolphins 14-13 with time winding down, the Dolphins set up for a field goal try to win the game and it ends up being BLOCKED! The Cowboys should walk away with a victory right? Well, that would’ve been the case had Leon Lutt not tried to pick up the ball. Lutt was not able to grab hold of the ball which was then recovered by the Dolphins. This allowed them to try again for that game-winner and this time converting to walk away with the victory.

2. Randy Moss only needs 3 catches

The stat line says it all, three catches, 163 yards, three touchdowns. Need we say more about Randy Moss and his epic Thanksgiving performance?

1. Butt Fumble

Taking the crown of all Thanksgiving moments is none other than Mark Sanchez, who administered one of the most viral plays in Thanksgiving history. The iconic Fumble resulted in Touchdown for the opposing Patriots who thumped the Jets 49-19 but the scoreline doesn’t matter, the stats of the game went out the window all for one great moment…BUTT FUMBLE!
