Every country has their own way of ringing in the new year. America drops an apple, China has a festival, Canada plays hockey, and Japan, apparently, holds a bizarre soccer match where three Japanese national players take on 100 school children.
The school children, who line up in an unprecedented 30-30-30-10 formation, begin the match by rushing at the national players, who appear to be lined up in something along the lines of 0-0-3-0. It’s the definition of quality vs. quantity – and as is the case with many facets of life, quality seems to be the way to go. According to the Daily Mail, the match has become a new years tradition.
While the nationals probably could have simply launched a rocket straight into the 10 opposing goalkeepers, it may be frowned upon if any of these kids end up leaving the pitch with a bloody nose.
It reminds us of the time former Liverpool teammates Philippe Coutinho and Gini Wijnaldum took on 30 of the clubs pre-academy squad members.
We like the 100 Japanese children better to be honest…
