It's been a tough season for fans of the Toronto Blue Jays. After two straight seasons of making the post season, the Blue Jays will be watching October baseball from the sidelines this year.
Thursday's 1-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals left the Blue Jays sitting at 71-82, ensuring that the team will finish with a record below .500. On top of guaranteeing a losing record, the Jays also earned a dubious honour in the process. Out of the 30 teams in the MLB, the Jays are the only team to never reach or be above the .500 mark at some point during the season.
Yes, while the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers have had a tough season as well, they managed to reach that mark in their first few games, posting 1-1 and 1-0 records respectively at the beginning of the year. As did the Athletics, Phillies, Braves, Mets and Giants who all got that achievement out of the way early, with all five teams posting a record of 1-1 in the first week of the season.
As Jays fans will remember, the team started off the season by going 1-9 in their first ten games, putting themselves in a hole early. They flirted with a .500 record during May and June, sitting just one game below .500 on seven different occasions. Alas, it was not meant to be. But with 2017 nearly over, Jays fans can now focus on the future, which looks quite bright due to a wealth of high-end prospects in the system.
