Wayne Gretzky stats are one of our favourite parts of hockey because he is one of the legends of sport that seems almost untouchable in today’s game.
Gretzky’s point totals are on another level, but it’s not as if he just played forever. His totals come from a stretch of dominance that is unmatched in NHL history. Even when you compare relative to his peers he was ridiculous, but when you start to compare it to today’s point totals things just don’t even seem real.
It’s one thing just looking at the stats on paper, but when you see them like this, like they would be if you were just watching a game in 2018 – this is just surreal.
It’s unfortunate for players like Connor McDavid who will likely never touch a franchise record for any points in Edmonton, unless he plays for like 20+ seasons, all in Edmonton.
To put it in perspective, that is 3.16 points per game which is more than double the leaders from 2017-18. Gretzky was on another level… but what you’re not seeing in this graphic is that the goalies looked a little different too. Unfortunately for that reason, we doubt we’ll ever see numbers like his again.
