A lot of well-paid quarterbacks in the NFL aren’t going to be playing like it in this year’s playoffs. In fact, many of them won’t be playing at all — of the six highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, not one is going to be playoff-bound this season.

Perhaps Jimmy Garoppolo, quarterback for the 49ers, gets a pass here, due to being injured since tearing his ACL in Week 3. The same doesn’t apply to any of the other quarterbacks (Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Kirk Cousins, Matthew Stafford, Derek Carr) on this list, however.

It’s easy to assign the blame to these players given their heft on the books, and certainly they aren’t blameless in where their teams finished, but it’s also worth remembering that a quarterback doesn’t make a team on their own, no matter how good. In many of these cases, it could be argued that weak or injury-ridden supporting casts were a factor as well.

Still, though, that’s $173 million worth of quarterbacks whose seasons are over now, and that’s never going to be easy to bite for any of those teams.

Meanwhile, with a cap hit of under $4 million this season, Patrick Mahomes will be leading the Chiefs into the playoffs with the best record in the AFC.
