Hockey is a sport that basically everyone in the Canada understands, but trying to explain it to someone who has never seen the sport can be somewhat difficult. Not for Randall Munroe.

Monroe is the author of the book “Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words” and in one section he attempts to explain hockey. The point of the book is to do explain some of the most interesting stuff in the world in only the thousand most common words.

So, here’s hockey… or “Sliding Around with Sticks”:

Hockey described using only the top 1000 most used words in the English language. from r/hockey

There are so many great lines in this, but the best part has to be the “Box for Bad People”, otherwise known as the penalty box.

Now if anyone is ever unfamiliar with Canada’s favourite sport, you have a screenshot you can send them that will explain it to them like they’re five. It’s also a great post to share for people who clearly don’t understand hockey.

So, next time someone responds to an opinion by referencing plus-minus, just send them this screenshot.
