Breaking news! Gerard Gallant has been axed by the Vegas Golden Knights.

On Wednesday morning, the team announced they had fired Gallant and hired former San Jose Sharks coach Peter DeBoer after going 4-6 over their last 10 games. Gallant served as the franchise’s first bench boss over the past two and a half seasons.

The Golden Knights have fired head coach Gerard Gallant. He will be replaced by Peter DeBoer.

The decision comes as somewhat of a surprise considering Gallant led Vegas (an expansion team!) to a Stanley Cup appearance in his first season, and nearly led them past the first round (thanks to a very questionable penalty call). The Golden Knights still sit five games above .500 and are very much in the playoff picture, but forget all of this for just one second. Let us remind you that there’s an All-Star game set to be played in St. Louis in in two weekends and a certain someone is supposed to be coaching the Pacific Division.

You guessed right, it is in fact Gerard! This might get a bit awkward…

Fans are reacting to the detail accordingly:

During his first two seasons in Vegas, Gallant led the team to a 94-56-14 record. Time will tell if he’s still in St. Louis for next week’s action.
